I found chestnuts on The Common.  It is, after all, that time of year.  The sycamores have left their leaves knee-deep on the pavement, while the horse chestnut at the end of our garden has rusted away completely.  But the chestnut are, at least partly, holding out a little bit longer.

A thinning canopy covers a thick layer of leaves on the ground.  And hidden amongst the leaves: a reef of spiky sea urchins.   The spines prick my fingers when I try to pick one up.  Excited squirrels squirrel above.

I collect a handful, then a few more.   For the cold nights that soon will come.
